How to Write a Thesis Statement for a TOEFL iBT Essay

The thesis statement is perhaps the most important sentence in the entire TOEFL essay—it tells the reader exactly what your opinion is or what your essay is going to be about. If the thesis statement is unclear or unrelated to the essay question, then the reader is lost: he will not understand what you are trying to say.
The easiest way of writing a TOEFL thesis statement is to give an opinion that clearly and directly answers the essay question. You can accomplish this by making a small change to the TOEFL essay question. For example, let’s say the TOEFL essay question is this:
Do you think the TOEFL iBT is an effective tool for measuring a person’s true level of English? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.One possible TOEFL thesis statement might be as follows:
I strongly believe that the TOEFL does not accurately measure one’s level of English.Or, if you have a different opinion, the thesis statement might look like this:
I firmly believe that the TOEFL test is an accurate and reliable measure of one’s level of English.Some students try to write about both sides of the issue; they might have a thesis statement similar to the following:
I believe that the TOEFL test is sometimes an effective tool for measure a person’s English.While this kind of thesis statement is acceptable, it is not recommended. Students who do not express a clear opinion in the thesis statement often have a very difficult time with the TOEFL essay. For many students, especially at the lower levels, it is very difficult to write a balanced essay that develops in a logical and coherently.
